Fonts by Mary Y van der Hagen

Of the two fonts by Mary van der Hagen offered here, FloraDings (shareware) is certainly found elsewhere but isn't really 'all over the Internet': it contains lovely ornamental and decorative outlines. The second, White Star, has possibly been more of a rarity and for some time was found in only one or two places. In the mid-1990s Mary's well-respected dingbats site was a popular port of call.

Fonts are in TrueType format. If you have difficulty extracting files from the zip, you may need to download WinZip or a similar utility. For help with unzipping your files and installing fonts, see links on our installation page.
Font samples below are low resolution images only, and the FloraDing preview shows only selected outlines, not the full character set.

'White Star' refers to the White Star Line, one of the great shipping companies from 'the golden age' of steamships, but whose name will also forever be associated with one of the greatest tragedies in maritime history — the sinking of the Titanic on the night of 14-15 April 1912, on her maiden voyage from Southampton. Titanic was a ship of the White Star Line.

This freeware font is a demo, according to the readme file which hinted at the possibility of expanding it at a later date. Whether this was ever the case we don't know, but there are six characters in the demo: four of WSL logos and two of RMS Titanic.

Titanic font For lettering in a rather quirky regular font, Anke-Art made the free title Titanic which features 'sinking' characters — see this page.

Only 705 souls survived the Titanic disaster, from some 2228 on board. There are many Titanic-related pages, and indeed about WSL, so a list of links for more info would be almost endless; but a good start would be the long-standing Titanic and Other White Star Ships where there's a great deal of material. Otherwise you only have to enter 'Titanic' or 'White Star Line' into a search engine to be well occupied.

One ship alone of the White Star Line remained afloat, the SS Nomadic. Like Titanic, she was built at Belfast by Harland & Wolff, in 1911. Much smaller, she was used to ferry 1st and 2nd class passengers in plush surroundings to White Star liners calling at Cherbourg, a task she fulfilled when Titanic called there prior to crossing the Atlantic — among Nomadic's passengers on that occasion were the Gugenheims. Over recent years and after a full and varied history, Nomadic's future was in doubt, and at the end of 2005 she was in grave danger of being scrapped unless funds could be raised to take her 'home', restore and preserve her. A spokesman for the Nomadic Preservation Society said, "The Nomadic is the last remnant of the White Star Line fleet, she is the last witness of the golden age of Transatlantic liners and the last floating link with RMS Titanic." An appeal raised enough to return her to Belfast in July 2006, and preservation work has begun, but needless to say substantial funds will still be required over the coming years. The Preservation Society has an excellent website with photos, history, ongoing progress and further information if you'd like to find out more.
